Caring for your Bar Soap

A bar of soap has been our most popular cleaning product for centuries. It’s got a lot of good things going for it.

  • One bar can be used for washing our bodies, hands and hair
  • Laundry, dishwashing and household cleaning
  • It’s relatively easy to make ourselves
  • When it’s gone, there is nothing to throw out. It’s zero waste!

However, these days we see various forms of soap and body wash coming to us in bottles as well. These are usually plastic bottles, and this does make them convenient for several reasons. Why do we end up choosing a bottled product over a bar of soap?

When it comes to using bar soap, there are a couple of things about them that can be gross and turn you off them.

They can be wet, slippery, soggy, and become difficult to get a hold of. This quickly makes us frustrated and has us looking for another option. And a soft, wet or soggy bar of soap doesn’t last as long either.

Here are some tips on how to care for your bar of soap:

  1. Keep it dry. When you’re not using it, make sure it has plenty of air to help it dry out.
  2. If it is still too wet and unable to dry on its own, pat it down with a towel, also drying the surface it sits on to help things along.
  3. If you keep it on the sink for washing hands, rest it on a soap dish. The best ones have ridged bottoms so the soap doesn’t sit completely flat and air can circulate underneath.
  4. If you use it in the shower, it would be better to store it in a soap container to protect it from excess moisture. That is, running water that will soften the bar, as well as moisture in the air between showers.
  5. If you are travelling, store it in a soap container. And while the two-piece containers have been known to pop open during the journey, perhaps you can keep them sealed with a rubber band or hair tie. Alternatively, try to find a container with a clip lock.

Keep these little tips in mind and you’ll be sure to get quality results, as well as long-lasting bars for whatever you use them for!
